Learning Scope:

Transport for NSW revised their Substation Safety Training to focus on 4 key Objectives:

1 – Provide a more efficient and effective training delivery structure to avoid interference with the management of critical live high voltage infrastructure.

2 – Eliminate the high risk involved with operating dangerous equipment during the training phase.

3 – Instil confidence in new team members to enter a fresh environment and be familiar with hazards involved with High Voltage infrastructure.

4 – Leverage the Virtual Simulation to deliver layers of information that are not possible in the real world and also do deliver behaviour shaping training that will reduce accidents.

Solution:

Delivering training in a hyper-real VR Simulation allowed all learning to be delivered without being present in a live high voltage site.

The VR Experience was rolled out to within a purpose built learning facility, with multiple training sessions performed simultaneously with a single instructor. The VR Simulation experience includes 3 core parts:

Guided Experience Stream: Follow built in voice guidance and learning objective User Interface instructions. The user can access the guidance UI at anytime for additional instructions on completing sequence based tasks. The instructor can enable a graded experience which tracks user behaviour, including the amount of times they need to refer to the assistance UI tool.

Unguided Exceptions Stream – where the user can continue the learning development and the Instructor can deploy Exception Event Incidents, such as Arc Flash Explosions. 

Unguided Test Stream: Places the learner into a simulated live facility where they are required to complete full procedural sequences unassisted and without incident.

Production

By collaborating with 7DX, the Yagoona Substation Simulation was replicated on a 1:1 scale including equipment, infrastructure and hazards. The substation switching sequence had been recorded and broken down in detail to have the training sequence built into the VR Experience to be as real as possible.

All learning material and media assets were ported into the 7DX LEAP Learning framework, allowing all learning to be transferred into the Simulated Experience and being linked to an online based learning data and analytics tracking and management system.

The design of a purpose built VR Training Centre allows for 6 VR sessions to be conducted at the same time as part of a single training session.

Learning Events, Hazards and Mistakes were programmed to elevate learning experience and ultimately resulting in a pass / fail evaluation.

Deployment

Impact:

The VR rollout focused on the key areas of Transport NSW by:

1- Delivers future proofed method for a safe training experience, with the following benefits:

• allowing more people to be trained, in less time from a single location
• Training to be conducted with less resources without impacting any live facility based operations, saving on costs and time

2 – The launch of dedicated VR Training Facility and updated training structure allows time spent within the simulation to be more effective than in person walkthrough, allowing the user to build familiarity at their needed pace. Learners can focus on key areas that may differ from their peers, with the instructor being able to identify key focus areas.

3/4 – Team members who’ve experienced graded guided and unguided experiences can enter a real world Substation with procedural familiarity and confidence, understanding all risks and hazards. Through the simulation users can experience what a wrong decision looks like to provide a memorable learning experience of what to avoid ever happening in real life.
